Spray Foam Insulation

Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) continues to rapidly grow across Canada as hydro, heating oil, propane and natural gas rates sky rocket. SPF insulation is installed in between 300,000 and 400,000 Canadian homes each year according the the Canadian Urethane Foam Contractors Association.  When properly installed by a professional such as GMW Restoration Services in Guelph, there are many benefits including up to a 50% reduction in heating and cooling costs annually.

Popularized over the past decade by reality shows, the installation of SPF insulation has seen double-digit growth each year (CUFCA).  Alongside its energy saving cost benefits is the durability of correctly installed product, which will not slump or break down like other traditional insulation. It is also mould proof and will not hold moisture or be rendered useless by water intrusion like fiberglass or cellulose insulation. Some SPF Insulation can even act as the vapor barrier, eliminating the need to hang, staple and seal rolls of plastic sheeting throughout the project.

What It Is

SPF Insulation is a polyurethane foam pumped to a spray gun as two separate chemicals (isocyanate and polyol resin)  which combine on contact at the spray tip to form a rigid foam that expands to fill voids in wall and attic cavities or as a coating if applied to flat surfaces including rooftops.  It hardens very quickly and can then be shaved to the level of walls and will not slump or gap as it forms a monolithic slab.

There are two types of SPF Insulation, open-cell and closed-cell.  While open-cell offers better R-value (the measure of thermal resistance) than traditional insulation, it is best for sound suppression where closed-cell or two-pound foam can seal the building envelope as it is much more dense and is used in most outdoor or exterior wall applications including exterior spray foam roof insulation. Closed-cell foam can offer R-values as high as R-6 per inch compared to that of R-2 to R-4 of blowin-in fiberglass while also playing the role of vapor barrier.
